Roulette Casino Game Rules
For someone who has never seen roulette, the game isn't too complicated. Roulette consists of a spinning wheel and a roulette table for placing bets. The wheel itself has 36 numbers placed in red or black slots in random positions. There is an even number of black and red slots and there are the same number of even and odds numbers. Depending on if you are playing American roulette or European roulette, there could be one or two zero slots. The American roulette wheel has both 0 and 00 (double zero) and the European wheel is only single zero with just the 0 spot. Any zeros are in green slots.
Tutorial - How to Play Roulette
The dealer (or croupier) will spin the wheel and release a ball into it. Players are betting on what numbers or colors the ball will land on when it stops spinning. Players can continue betting even while the ball is moving until it starts to slow down and fall in. There are all sorts of different bets that can be placed with various payouts and odds. Some bets have nearly even odds and others have very high odds, but also a high house edge. You can read about every bet and their corresponding payouts on our roulette betting page located in the navigation menu.
Most of the bets are very simple to understand. You can place your chips on a black spot or red spot if you are betting on colors. The table also has spots for each number so you can bet on all the individual numbers. You can purchase your chips from the croupier and begin betting. Usually each player gets their own color chips so no one gets confused when many people start betting at once and to know who gets paid after a win.
If you are playing roulette at an online casino, you get your own personal roulette table and wheel and the colors of the chips denote denomination sizes of money. Everything is computerized so you never have to worry about this problem. In the land based casinos, the denomination value of chips and color can change throughout the day. Interestingly enough, players normally can't cash in their chips at the main lobby cashier.
It is important that you cash out your chips before leaving roulette. The dealer has no way of remembering every player throughout the day and the value of your chips. You could actually be walking away with a bunch of very small denomination chips and lose a ton of money this way, especially if the dealer can't remember you or if the dealer actually leave their shift. This is another benefit of roulette on internet casinos, you never have to worry about this problem.
The table looks a lot like a grid and it is very easy to figure out the features. For instance, when a spin is complete, the croupier (roulette dealer) will place a maker on the winning number displayed on the table. This number is surrounded by a red or black circle so you will known what color it is too. Then all the losing bets are taken off of the table for the casino's profit. Once this is done, the winners are paid their payout odds.
A few other important things to remember is proper betting technique. Don't place a bet on the table until all of the previous bets from the previous spin have been paid. Also, when the croupier says "no more bets" when the ball is about to stop in the wheel, you shouldn't bet anymore. If you do bet, this is known as "past posting" and it is cheating. Basically this is betting after the ball has stopped and you know the winning number. You run the risk of making an illegal bet by cheating at roulette and getting thrown out of the casino or even arrested. Again, this is a good benefit of online roulette where the software is automatic and prevents this problem.
